I remember reading about this Loving v. Virginia case in high school!
For all those people in interracial relationships this is a must watch. See how Richard Perry Loving and his wife Mildred Loving fought to have their marriage recognized in the state of Virginia. Back in 1958, Virginia along with 16 other states prohibited interracial marriage under the Racial Integrity Act.
Instead of throwing them in jail like the law wanted to do, the judge suspended the sentencing of 25 years on the condition that they did not return to Virginia. The Lovings packed it up and moved back to D.C. (where they had been married) and had their 3 children there.
Here’s some crap, here’s what the judge stated:
“Almighty God created the races white, black, yellow, malay and red, and he placed them on separate continents. And, but for the interference with his arrangement, there would be no cause for such marriage. The fact that he separated the races shows that he did not intend for the races to mix.”
The documentary will appear on HBO at 9pm on Valentine’s Day. I hear it’s pretty good so I WILL BE WATCHING!
Sad fact that I wanna ruin for you all too:
Richard Loving died in a car accident by a drunk driver at the age of 41 in 1975. In the same accident, Mildred lost her right eye.
